UMT Vice Chancellor Receives IUGS Science Excellence Award 2012
Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Ibrahim Komoo receives the Science Excellence Award 2012 from International Union of Geological Sciences in the field of Environmental Geology. This award was presented in a special ceremony that was held around the 34th International Geological Congress in Brisbane Australia.
The award given was for his involvement and big impact on the issue of environmental geosciences. The biggest involvement and achievement he did was pioneering in the efforts of making Langkawi to be the first Global Geopark in the South East Asia region.
Prof. Dato’ Dr. Ibrahim Komoo was the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Inovations and Research Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) before being appointed as Vice Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu starting from 13 April 2012. As an academician in the fields of Geoscience he was involved in a lot of achievement locally and internationally. Some of the involvement included Fellow of Institute of Geology, Council Member of Academy Science of Malaysia, President of Geological Society (Malaysia), Vice President of Institute of Geology, Vice President of IAEG. He is also the head of Environmental and Natural Resources Cluster in Malaysia.
In the context of geology fields of study, he is a source of communications that bonds to help share his expertise in communication and translating issue that form the public policies to ensure that the environment can be sustained to cater the people’s need especially in the fields of earth science.
Dr. Brian Marker from IUGS was given the honor to introduce Prof. Dato’ Dr. Ibrahim Komoo among the participants of the congress.
“His work has embrace engineering geology, geohazard management, environmental geology, natural conservation and Earth Systems science for sustainable development. IUGS Commission for Geosciences in Environmental Management has been particularly grateful for his support,” said Dr. Brian Marker in his speech.
The congress this year was held in Brisbane, Australia with 8,000 participants all over the world. The IUGS Science Excellence Awards were created in 2011 to recognize outstanding original contributions or achievement that marks a major advance to the earth sciences.
